2009 French Open Day 6

Upsets begin was they head into the round of 16 at Roland Garros. Number 3 seed Venus Williams loses in straight sets to Hungary’s Agnes Szavay, seeded 29th.   On the men’s side, French hopeful Gilles Simon, seeded 7th was knocked out by number 30 Victor Hanescu.

Williams, a 7-time Grand Slam champion, was in a little bit of a shock at her loss, saying, “I’m used to beating people 6-0. I’m not used to my shot not going in and losing a set 6-0. So it was completely foreign ground for me.”

Other top ranked women continued to advance, as #1 Dinara Safina rolled into the 4th round.  Safina has only given up a total of 4 games in the first 3 rounds.  Defending champion Ana Ivanovic easily got past Iveta Benesova, 6-0, 6-2.

The king of clay, #1 Rafael Nadal won over former #1 Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.  Nadal is looking more and more unstoppable as he goes for his 5th straight Roland Garros tropghy.
