The impossible has happened. Rafael Nadal was beaten on clay at Roland Garros. Going into today, Nadal had posted an undefeated record of 31-0 at the French Open, going for a record 5th Championship. All that ended when 23-seed Robin Soderling of Sweden beat Nadal in 4 sets. Until now, it was a given that Nadal would be in the final, the only question was going to be who he faced. Now, all eyes are on Roger Federer, who needs only this event to complete his career Grand Slam. With 2 of the top players going out early, (Nadal and Djokovic), the path just got a little easier.
This was a day that both defending champions lost, as Ana Ivanovic was beaten handily by Victoria Azarenka.
Other winners advancing to the quarterfinals were:
Fernando Gonzalez, Nikolay Davydenko, and Andy Murray.
Women’s winners were:
Dinara Safina, Maria Sharapova, and Dominika Cibulkova.
