2009 HP Byron Nelson Championship Day 2

IRVING, TX – Dallas resident Rory Sabbatini stormed to the front of the leaderboard with 4 consecutive birdies on the back 9 to finish with a 6-under par 64, giving him a two day total of 8-under 132.  Joining Sabbatini at the top of the board is John Mallinger, who offset 3 bogeys with 4 birdies and 2 eagles to post a score of 65.

Sabbatini enjoys the benefits of playing at home, stating, “I think it’s just nice to be at home.  Obviously as much as we all travel, it’s nice to have a home week where quite literally you really are going home. You’ve got your family, friends, pet, your own bed.  It just seems a little more relaxing.”

Sabbatini also had praise for the course, “They’re definitely smoother this morning than they were yesterday afternoon.  You know, they’re still a little soft, so that’s going to be, I think, the trend that we’ll notice is in the morning you’ll probably get a few more good putting rounds out there than in the afternoons.  But ultimately give yourself enough opportunities, you are going to make some putts.”

Thursday’s leaders did not fare as well, James Nitties shot 68 and Ken Duke, 69, for scores of 133 and 134, respectively.

The cut came at 1-under 139 with 74 players advancing. Several top names did not make the cut, including defending champion Adam Scott (142), 2007 winner Scott Verplank (140), Anthony Kim (140), and David Toms (142).

Round 3 will begin early, with groups of three to tee off at 7:30 am due to potential inclement weather in the afternoon.
