2009 US Open Day 1

The final Grand Slam event of the year is underway in Flushing Meadows, New York.  An opening day record crowd of 59,848 attended the day/evening sessions at the 2009 US Open.

On the men’s side of the draw, only two of the seeded players were upset, with number 26 Paul-Henri Mathieu losing to Mikhail Youzhny and American John Isner surprising number 28 Victor Hanescu.

Notable players seeing action were number 1 Roger Federer winning over newcomer Devin Britton, of Brandon, MS. Number 5 Andy Roddick winning the nightcap match over Bjorn Phau.

American James Blake had little trouble in his victory over Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo. Likewise, former world number 1 Lleyton Hewitt cruised to a win over Thiago Alves.

There were also 2 upsets on the women’s side.  Number 25 Kaia Kanepi lost to Kai-Chen Chang while number 28 Sybille Bammer was upset by Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez.

The top seeded players fared better, led by Serena (2) and Venus Williams (3), both winning their opening matches, despite a slow start by Venus. 

Number 7 Vera Zvonareva won in straight sets over Nuria Llagostera Vives and number 8 Victoria Azarenka cruised to a win over Alexandra Dulgheru.

Number 10 Flavia Pennetta easily won over Edina Gallovits.
