2009 US Open Day 2

Flushing, NY – Ana Ivanovic, who reached the world’s number 1 ranking in 2008 after winning the French Open, continued her downward spiral in the 1st round of the US Open.  Ivanovic, seeded 11th, lost to Kateryna Bondarenko, ranked 52 in the world.  Ivanovic looked to have an easy time in the first set, winning 6-2, but Bondarenko came alive, winning the second set and forcing the third into a 6-6 tiebreak.  The tiebreak was more about errors than winning, as both players struggled with landing shots and making server before an error by Ivanovic sealed her fate.

In other women’s upsets, number 16 Virginie Razzano lost to Yanini Wickmayer, while Shahar Peer overpowered number 32 Agnes Szavay.

Women’s winners on the day included number 1 Dinara Safina, who overcame a first set loss to Olivia Rogowska, and 29th seed Maria Sharapova.

Other top-10 players in action were #4 Elena Dementieva, #5 Jelena Jankovic, #6 Svetlana Kuznetsova, and #9 Caroline Wozniaki, all winning.

The men were headlined by #2 Andy Murray, who won in straight sets over Ernests Gulbis and #4 Novak Djokovic, winning over Ivan Ljubicic.  Other top 10 men winning were #7 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and #10 Fernando Verdasco.

Men’s upsets included Nicolas Lapentti over #19 Stanislas Wawrinka, Ivan Navarro over #27 Ivo Karlovic, and American Jesse Witten over #29 Igor Andreev.
