2009 US Open Day 4

Day 4’s action boded well for American players, as 4 men advanced to the 3rd round. # 5 Andy Roddick took court late in the night and eased his way with a 6-1,6-4,6-4 win over Marc Gicquel.  #21 James Blake and #22 Sam Queerey had a little more difficult time, each requiring 4 sets for the victory. Unseeded John Isner also advanced with his win.

The top-rated doubles team of brothers Bob and Mike Bryan also advanced with ease.

But the story of the day was teenager Melanie Oudin, who provided the biggest upset of the tournament.  Oudin came from a set down to shock the #4 seed Elena Dementieva.  Oudin joins American sisters Serena and Venus Williams in the 3rd round.

In other action, #5 Jelena Jankovic was also upset, along with # 19 Patty Schnyder, #23 Sabine Lisicki, and #30 Alona Bondarenko.  Only 16 of the top 32 seeds in the women’s draw remain.

Women’s winners included #1 Dinara Safina, #6 Svetlana Kuznetsova, #9 Caroline Wosniacki, and #29 Maria Sharapova.
