2009 Wimbledon Day 3

Day 3 provided the first major upset of the tournament, with Gisela Dulko winning against Maria Sharapova in 3 sets. Dulko hung on to win a wild final game to take the match 6-2,3-6, 6-4. Sharapova seemed to run out of steam on her serve, understandable with this being just her fourth event after taking most of the past year off to have shoulder surgery.

In other marquee matches, Roger Federer continued his march toward a 6th Wimbledon title with a straight set victory over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez while Serena Williams dismantled Jarmila Groth.  Serena is playing like she has a purpose, and continuing to gripe about the no eating in the locker room rule.

American Mardy Fish reached the 3rd round by beating Janko Tipsarevic. Fish will have a more difficult time in the next round because he will face number 4 Novak Djokovic, who beat Simon Gruel in straight sets.  Americans Sam Querrey and Taylor Dent were not so fortunate, as they both lost in the 2nd round.

On the women’s side, number 8 Victoria Azarenka handily defeated Ioana Raluca Olaru while Daniela Hantuchova ousted Zheng Jie.

Number 4 Elena Dementieva, no. 7 Vera Zvonareva, and no. 10 Nadia Petrova all advanced to the 3rd round.
