2009 Wimbledon Day 4

Day 4 at Wimbledon provided only one upset, Lleyton Hewitt defeated 5-seed Juan Martin Del Potro in straight sets.  Hewitt, who won Wimbledon in 2002, had fallen to number 56 in the world.   He showed no signs of that slide as he served 14 aces and moved around the court like a man 10 years younger. Del Potro, a rising star in the tennis universe, simply had no answer for the Hewitt attack.

The rest of the seeded players on the mens draw won today, including British favorite and no. 3 seed Andy Murray, and the top American, Andy Roddick. No. 8 Gilles Simon and no. 10 Fernando Gonzalez won as well.

On the women’s side, all the seeded players advanced to the third round, headlined by Venus Williams’ victory over Kateryna Bondarenko.  Williams, the defending champion showed the form that has taken her to 5 Wimbledon titles.

Number 1 seed Dinara Safina had little trouble advancing to the next round, as did number 5 Svetlana Kuznetsova, no. 6 Jelena Jankovic, and no. 9 Caroline Wozniacki.
