2010 Australian Open Day 2

More surprises in the men’s draw as 6 seeded players were upset in the first round, notably Robin Soderling, the 8th seed, and Sam Querrey, no. 25.

Querrey has been rising in the rankings and came into the tournament as the 2nd highest seeded American.

Those advancing were no. 1 Roger Federer, who survived losing the opening set to Igor Andreev. Federer went on to win in 4 sets.

Other men in the top-10 to advance were No. 3 Novak Djokovic, no. 6 Nikolay Davydenko, no. 9 Fernando Verdasco, and no. 10 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.

Also advancing was Australian favorite Lleyton Hewitt, the former world no. 1.

For the women, no. 1 Serena Williams easily advanced, as did her sister Venus (11).  Other top 10’s to advance were Jelena Jankovic (8) and Agnieszka Radwanska (10).

Seeded players not able to advance included Virginie Razzano (18), Dominika Cibulkova (23), and Anabel Medina Garrigues (25).

American Melanie Oudin, who gained fame by getting to the quarterfinals of the US Open, lost in the 1st round to Alla Kudryavtseva.  3 additional American women were eliminated: Varvara Lepchenko, Jill Craybas, and Coco Vandeweghe.
