2010 Australian Open Day 8

Day 8 provided some of the best match-ups of the tournament as the players attempt to get into the quarterfinal round.

No. 1 Roger Federer continued to look strong as he knocked out Australian hero Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.

Novak Djokovic (3) eased past Lukasz Kubot, and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga struggled to advance against Nicolas Almagro, winning 9-7 in the 5th set.

The most interesting men’s matchup pitted the red-hot Nikolay Davydenko (6) against Fernando Verdasco (9). Verdasco fell two sets down before mounting a comeback to send the match to a 5th set.  Once in the final set, Davydenko prevailed 6-3.

The women’s top seed, Serena Williams, also faced a hometown opponent, knocking out Samantha Stosur in an easy two sets.

In the 4th round upset, Na Li (16) beat Caroline Wozniacki (4) in straight sets.

Venus Williams (6) lost a set, but overcame Francesca Schiavone (17).

After falling behind a set and a break, Victoria Azarenka (7), came back to defeat Vera Zvonareva (9).
