Zach Johnson wins 2010 Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial

Zach Johnson sets a new tournament record while winning the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.  Johnson had a 72-hole score of 259 (-21).  The previous best tournament score at Colonial was Kenny Perry’s 261 in both 2003 and 2005.

With the win, Johnson joins Phil Mickelson as the only players to win a PGA TOUR event in each of the last four seasons (2007-2010).  It is Johnson’s 7th TOUR victory and 3rd in the state of Texas.

Johnson made 5 birdies on the back-nine, including one on the 17th hole that essentially clinched the win.  His only bogey of the day came on hole 14.  His final round score of 64 (-6) was enough to give him the overall win by 3 strokes.

Brian Davis finished in 2nd place with a score of 262 (-18).  It is Davis’ second runner-up finish this year, the other being the well documented Verizon Heritage in which he called a 2-stroke penalty on himself, giving Jim Furyk the win.

Ben Crane birdied the final hole to move into a tie for 3rd place at 17-under.  With the T3 finish, Crane moves into the top-5 in the FedExCup standings.

Jeff Overton also finished at 17-under to tie with Crane.  It is Overton’s third top-3 finish in his last five events.

Fan favorite John Daly finished at 3-under, bouncing back from his plus-5 round on Saturday.  Daly drew a huge gallery all four days and was overall pleased with his result, “Yeah, yesterday was tough to handle,” said Daly, “but I just hit it bad yesterday.  If you don’t hit fairways out here, you’re going to pay the price.  But I stayed with the same game plan today.  The only thing I changed, I thought driver on 18 was a good play.  Other than that, I hit a few more fairways today, and I putted OK but not great.”
