2010 Crowne Plaza Invitational Round 1

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club is underway.  Jeff Overton, Jason Bohn and Blake Adams share the lead with 7-under par 63s.  This is only 1 above the tournament opening-round record of 62.  It is the fourth consecutive year that the opening round top score is 63.

Blake Adams, coming off his 2nd place finish last week down the road at the HP Byron Nelson championship, continued his hot streak.  His 63 equals his low round on the PGA TOUR.

Jeff Overton, who had his career-best round, attributed his success today to the greens and a new driver, the TaylorMade SuperFast.  “The course sets up great.  The greens are just perfect.”, stated Overton.  “I love greens that really roll well, and you hit good shots and you are going to get rewarded because the greens are nice.”   Overton went on to say he is hitting the ball faster and farther, “4 1/2 miles per hour (faster), with about 15 yards whenever I hit the ball good.  I guess that’s why they call it SuperFast.”

Jason Bohn shot his 63 while suffering from severe pains in his left ear, he was planning to see a doctor shortly after his round.  Bohn was on his way to a record round when he bogeyed 18.

Phil Mickelson, looking for his 3rd win at Colonial,  finished at 1-over despite making birdies on the 1st two holes.  He made no excuses, however, “There is no excuse.  There is no wind.  The golf course has been in perfect shape and there are a lot of scores out there.  I just wasn’t one of them.”

John Daly is at -4, his first bogey-free round in 83 outings.

Although the last four PGA TOUR events have been won by international players, this round had a decidedly American feel.  All three players at the top, and six of the nine players tied for 5th, are American.
