2010 Crowne Plaza Invitational Round 3

Round 3 of the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas, saw few surprises.   Bryce Molder continues to hold the lead at -16, though Brian Davis came up two strokes to take a share of the lead.

Fans and players alike joined Crowne Plaza and Colonial in celebrating the 2nd year of “Pink Out”, which started last year as a show of support for Amy Mickelson, wife of Phil Mickelson.  The idea was such a success that the Colonial is continuing the tradition.   Players and fans were encouraged to wear pink to raise awareness and support for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure program against breast cancer.

Molder was pushed hard by those before him, who were putting up great scores.  3 players, Lee Janzen, Jerry Kelly and Pat Perez all shot 63 (-7).  Another 5 players shot 6-under-64.

Molder held on to the lead despite a double-bogey on hole 5.  “Yes, the front 9 was interesting, fun, whatever you want to call it.”, stated Molder.  “I started off, I hit maybe the two best shots I’ve hit all week on the first hole and ended up not making birdie.  And then I went on a nine one-putt streak in a row which was nice.  It was needed obviously, because I was struggling a little bit.  And then the back 9 was just the opposite, extremely solid, a lot more fairways, a lot more greens and a lot of tap ins.  So it was kind of a tail of two 9s, but there is a lot of ways to do it.”

Brian Davis met with a group of students today before his round.  Their teacher had used a story about Davis calling a penalty on himself, despite the fact his infraction could have gone unnoticed.  Davis’ good sportsmanship cost him a chance for his first PGA TOUR victory.  Meeting with the students was an inspiration to Davis, “A nice bunch of kids.  Anything you can have a positive thing come out to children is a good thing.  So, you know, I was very happy the kids were here today and hopefully had a good time.”  Davis went on to score a 5-under-65 and grab a share of the lead.

Zach Johnson had a bogey-free round of 6-under-64 to put him in 3rd going into Sunday.  “I haven’t had a low putting round, but that’s because I’m hitting a lot of greens.”, said Johnson, “I gave myself a lot of opportunities which is all you can ask for.  Today i fortunately made a few.”

K.J. Choi looked like he might have a course record until No. 18.  Choi scored an 8 on the par-4, which dropped him all the way to a tie for 18th.  Choi ended the round with -4, giving him 10-under for the tournament.  “Everything went all right before that hole,” said Choi. “My tee shots, my irons were all going great.  But going into that hole I knew it was a tough one.  A few years ago when I had a triple, I hit it to the right, so I was trying to hit it to the left a little bit, but I drew it a little too much, too far left, so it was just bad luck there.”

Paul Goydos had a hole-in-one on the 13th hole with a 5-iron from 195 yards.

There were 11 eagles on the day, 6 were on par-4 holes, the most at Colonial since 1983.
