2010 French Open Day 3

Another top-10 upset in the women’s draw today as No. 9 Dinara Safina went out in the first round.  Safina, a former world no. 1, and a finalist at Roland Garros the past two times, lost in her opener to unseeded Kimiko Date Krum.  Safina, whose mental toughness has been questioned, had 17 double-faults as part of her 38 unforced errors.   Krum, the 39 year old who is coming back after a 12 year retirement, had 37 winners, including 11 of 18 on net approaches.

Other notable women in action today were Maria Sharapova (12), easily winning over Ksenia Pervak and Justine Henin (22), who is making her first return to the French Open following a two year retirement.  Henin won at Roland Garros 3 out of 4 times from 2003-2007.

Top men on court today included No. 2 Rafael Nadal over Gianni Mina in straight sets, Fernando Verdasco (7) over Igor Kunitsyn, and David Ferrer (9) over David Guez.  American Andy Roddick (6) needed 5 sets to win over Jarrko Nieminin.

In an upset today, Robby Ginepri defeated his friend and fellow American Sam Querrey (18).
