2011 Australian Open – Day 2

Five of the top-10 women at the Australian Open were in action today, all winning.  No. 2 Vera Zvonareva easily won over Sybille Bammer.  Kim Clijsters (3) dominated former No. 1 Dinara Safina, 6-0,6-0.  Samantha Stosur (5), Jelena Jankovic (7), and Shahar Peer (10) were also winners.

Going home early is No. 19 Ana Ivanovic, losing in an extended 3rd set to Ekaterina Makarova 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.  Also going home are Americans Lauren Davis, Coco Vandeweghe, Christina McHale, Varvara Lepchenko, Irina Falconi, and Melanie Oudin.  Only Venus Williams and Vania King remain on Day 3 to represent the United States.

All but one of the seeded men advanced, led by No. 1 Rafael Nadal.  Nadal did not lose a game before his opponent retired at 6-0, 5-0. 

Robin Soderling (4), Andy Murray (5), David Ferrer (7), and Mikhail Youzhny all advanced, as did Americans John Isner (20), Michael Russell, and Ryan Sweeting.

Donald Young was the only American man not to advance today.
