2012 Texas US Open Sectional Begins

ARLINGTON, Texas – The 2012 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament kicked off in Arlington with 44 men’s matches. All participants are playing with the hopes of representing Texas in the US Open National Playoffs and the chance to play in the US Open, by winning the tournament.

Day one action at the Arlington Tennis Center saw San Antonio native Oleksandr Kotsiuk upset Juan Moreiras 6-4, 6-4 in the round of 64. Moreiras was the San Antonio high schooler that represented Texas in the US Open Playoffs last year. Moreiras battled and eventually lost 6-4, 6-2 to No. 2 seeded David Martin, a longtime pro who has participated in the US Open men’s doubles every year since 2007.

Kotsiuk had earlier defeated Bryan Leif of Dallas 6-1, 6-1 and will face Ryan Anthony Ybarra. Ybarra defeated Joshua Rifkin 6-3, 6-1 and Angelo Faustino, 6-1, 6-1.

Top seed Harrison Adams from New Braunfels defeated Chase Bartlett 6-1, 6-1 and No. 2 seed Jon Weigand advanced with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Jake Williams of Dallas. Adams will face McKinney native Nickolas Ashburn who defeated Robert Rodriquez 6-1, 6-2.

The previous two Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying winners will meet when Dallas resident Artem Baradach (SMU) defeated Omar Naguib of Amarillo 6-4, 6-3. Baradach last years 2011 Texas US Open Sectional Qualifying Tournament men’s winner will face the 2010 winner Colin Hoover (Texas A&M) at 9 a.m. Hoover advanced when his opponent Kamran Khan withdrew with an emergency.

Christopher Maher defeated Nikolas Coceanu 6-3 (ret.). Maher will face Justin Winton from Pasadena who

defeated George Rivers 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Jacob Brisky from Southlake beat John Sellars 6-1, 6-0 and will face Gandhi Bhakthavachalam from Spring, Texas. Bhakthavachalam defeated Arlington native Kyle Murphy 6-0, 6-0.

Miguel Alda of Round Rock defeated Justin Ulcak 6-0, 6-0 and Mate Cutura 6-7 (2), 2-1 (ret. ill). Alda will face Elliott Minvielle, from Youngsville, La. Minvielle defeated Maxwell Jones 6-0, 6-0, and Kenneth Johnson 6-0, 6-3.

Andrew Adams from Plano defeated Michael Datu 6-0, 6-0 while Hunter Scammahorn of Tyler defeated Benjamin Snowden of Cypress 6-0, 6-0. Montgomery native Brad Henkelman defeated Latorris Webb 6-3, 6-0 and Ernest Mendoza 6-1, 6-2.

Andrew Hutchinson of Houston defeated Cory Jones 6-0, 6-0 while Samuel Khoshbin of Dallas defeated Justin Maurer 6-1, 6-0. Carrick Kampe of Austin defeated Kyle Tucker 6-3, 6-3 while Samuel Glammalva of Houston beat Alex Crane 6-1, 6-1. Josh Hagar of Austin downed Gino Raneri 6-1, 6-1 while Luke Mason of Dallas defeated Brandon Gandy 6-0, 6-2. Austin native Jay Henton defeated Joseph Gray 6-1, 6-3. Aaron Tran of Garland defeated Charles Boyce 7-6 (3), 6-4 and will face Drew Machholz of Dallas who defeated Sam Laudon 6-0, 7-5. Casey Bell of Godley will face Robin Fernandes of Houston.

Brady Bohrnstedt of Fate defeated Miguel Camps 6-0, 6-3 and will face Max Frey from Broken Arrow, Okla. Frey beat Gregory Mitayamekin 6-0, 6-0 and Will Stein 6-0, 6-3. Aaron Chaffee of Frisco defeated Daniel Hanqstefer of Signal Mountain, Tenn., 6-4, 4-6, 6-1. Chaffee earlier beat Clint Broadie 6-3, 6-4 while Stein defeated Mark Dressendorfer 6-0, 6-0. Chaffee will face Jordan Hart of McKinney who beat Bobby Cocanougher 6-4, 6-2.

The men’s round of 32 continues on Tuesday, June 19 at 9 a.m., and the women begin play at noon with top-seeded Ryan Brown of Spicewood taking on Kristen Mee of Dallas at 9 a.m. and No. 2 seeded Elena Kordolaimi, a sophomore at Stephen F. Austin State University, taking on Alannah Mendoza of Corpus Christi at 9:15 a.m.

The mixed doubles play will begin on Wednesday, June 20 at 10:30 a.m.
