Another Number 1 falls in Paris

A day after world No. 1 Roger Federer was upset in the quarterfinals of the French Open, another huge upset took place.  Serena Williams, world No. 1 and supposedly unstoppable in the late rounds of Grand Slams, was defeated by No. 7 Samantha Stosur.  Stosur, who couldn’t put the match away when leading 5-3 in the second set, withstood a match point by Williams in the third before finally getting the win.

Stosur, who has now beaten two of the Grand Slam unbeatables, Williams and Justine Henin, will face Jelena Jankovic (4), who defeated Yaroslava Schvedova.

In the bottom half of the men’s quarter-finals, No. 2 Rafael Nadal defeated No. 19 Nicolas Almagro to advance to the semi-finals and hope to regain the world No. 1 title along with the Rolad Garros title.

Jurgen Melzer (22) rallied to beat No. 3 Novak Djokovic.  Melzer came from 2 sets down to earn the right to face Nadal.
