She was nearly out in her opening match, rallying from 4-1 down in the third set to German rising star Mona Barthel, but Victoria Azarenka escaped that early scare and went all the way to the BNP Paribas Open title, losing just 21 games in her other five rounds. In the final she continued her recent domination of Maria Sharapova with a 62 63 victory, her fourth straight set win in the four finals they’ve played against each other. Azarenka is now 23-0 on the season, the best start to a season since Martina Hingis went 37-0 to kick off 1997.

Azarenka isn’t the only one building major momentum: Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond extended their doubles win streak to 16 matches and four tournaments at Indian Wells.
