Cell phones to be allowed at Colonial.

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial, May 16-22, will allow fans to carry and use mobile devices for the first time in 2011, as part of a new PGA Tour initiative aimed at enhancing the fan experience, including giving spectators instant access to leaderboards and tournament information through those devices.

While fans are prohibited from making or receiving calls except when away from play in designated concession areas, or indoors, spectators will be allowed to receive and send text messages and check data throughout the golf course. Mobile devices may not be used for audio or video recording, or for taking still photos during the competition Thursday-Sunday. The taking of still photos is permitted Monday-Wednesday only.

“We appreciate the PGA TOUR embracing the opportunity to enhance the fan’s tournament day experience,” Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial Tournament Director Peter Ripa said. “Fans can stay up-to-date with live scoring, live player updates, video highlights and social media. Our fans will be able to also stay connected with the office and family. We recognize today many people have the expectation to be accessible 24/7. The policy allows for our fans to stay within reach but continue to enjoy the tournament for as long as they wish each day.”

The Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial has committed several months of planning to implement the new initiative. A massive effort will be made to ensure everyone attending the tournament is informed on the guidelines for mobile device use.

Public parking shuttles to Colonial Country Club will have a video message on the policy, while volunteers and on-course signage will continue to communicate this important messaging to attendees. The tournament will have a special Mobile Device Task Force to monitor the following of the policy, paying extra special attention to marquee pairings and leader groups. Course marshals will continually help remind patrons of the policy as well. Major violators of the policies will have their mobile device confiscated by security.

“We understand that mobile devices have become a part of everyday life,” said Andy Pazder, PGA TOUR chief of operations. “There is a balance we are looking to achieve between maintaining the integrity of the competition and allowing spectators to utilize their mobile devices in various capacities. We anticipate our fans will be respectful of the policy.”
