Chargers Over Cowboys In Preseason Matchup

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner is still mentoring his former player, now Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett.  Turner’s Chargers rode roughshod over Garrett’s Cowboys 20-7 Sunday night at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

Chargers quarterback Phillip Rivers was 8 of 11 for 92 yards and a TD as he led the Chargers to 2 scores on the 3 drives in which he played.   By comparison, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was 8 for 12 for 58 yards and a TD plus  an interception.  In the battle of the backups, the Chargers added another 60 yards on 12 of 17 passing while Dallas added 159 yards on 17 of 30.  Dallas’ 3rd quarterback, Stephen McGee, had most of that, 16/29 for 157.

The Dallas running game was successful, with Felix Jones leading the way, carrying 7 times for 56 yards.  Rookie Phillip Tanner added 31 yards on 4 carries.  The highlight of the game was a play that did not even count, as Tanner scampered through the line for 22 yards to the end zone – without his helmet.  With new rules designed to protect the players, the play is considered dead when a ball carrier loses his helmet.

The Dallas defense gave up 10 first downs passing, as the secondary appeared confused and out of place.  The Cowboys only had 2 sacks in the game as the Chargers seemed content to throw short passes on quick routes.

Dallas travels to Minnesota for a Saturday night preseason game against the Vikings.
