Cowboys get back on track

The Dallas Cowboys finally got on track, winning for the first time this year on the road in Houston.  Though not a perfect game, the 27-13 victory brought a sigh of relief to everyone in Dallas.

Quarterback Tony Romo earned a 127.6 passer rating and the team rushed for over 100 yards, showing the firepower that has been missing in the first two games.

The Good

Getting the win was the best thing for this team.  In only the 3rd game of the year, this was a must-win for the Cowboys, and they met the challenge.

The offense mounted drives of 80 and 90 yards while controlling the ball and the clock for most of the game.  Receiver Roy Williams had his best game as a Cowboy, with 5 receptions for 117 yards and 2 TD’s, including one for 63 yards.

Kicker David Buehler, considered on the hot seat, came through with field goals of 49 and 40 yards in his only attempts.  Buehler also made all 3 PAT attempts.

The Bad

The Dallas defense gave up 4 plays over 20 yards, including one on 3rd and 19, giving the Texans a first down.  The Cowboys allowed the Texans to convert on 4 of 9 3rd down attempts.  The Dallas defense seemed to buckle down on short yardage situations, but showed weakness when Houston went down the field.

The Ugly

Penalties still plague Dallas.  The Cowboys were penalized 8 times in the game, with another 4 that were either declined or offsetting.

The Cowboys had 5 drives with no penalties, and scored on 3 of them.  By contrast, Dallas only scored on 1 of the 3 drives when they were penalized.  The Cowboys defense got into the penalty act, gathering 6 flags, 2 for lining up offsides.  Even the special teams drew 2 flags.

The Cowboys have still got to get a handle on the mental mistakes, better opponents will make them pay for it.
