DeChambeau is coming off back-to-back PGA Tour wins, most recently capturing the Dell Techologies Championship on Sept. 3. In Tuesday’s press conference, Furyk selected DeChambeau along with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson as the first three captain’s picks for the U.S. squad.

During his time on the Hilltop, DeChambeau collected three career wins, most notably winning the individual crown at the 2015 NCAA Championship. DeChambeau also won a conference title in 2014 and holds the Mustang record for lowest career scoring average. In addition, he won the 2015 U.S. Amateur Championship, becoming just the fifth golfer to pair a US Amatuer Crown with a NCAA Championship in the same year. DeChambeau also helped SMU reach the quarters of the 2014 NCAA Championship and would turn pro after being the Low Amatuer at the 2016 Masters.

The Modesto, California, native becomes the first Mustang to represent the United States at the competition since Payne Stewart. Stewart appeared in five Ryder Cups with his last coming in the historic 1999 American comeback victory a month before his passing. Stewart’s 1993 team was the last American squad to win in Europe, a streak DeChambeau and the American team will be looking to snap in 2018.
The 2018 Ryder Cup is set to take place from Le Golf National near Paris. The Americans look to defend their 2016 title beginning Sep. 28, with the event wrapping up on the 30th.
