Del Potro wins 2009 US Open

Mens’ Final results in a shocking upset. Juan Martin Del Potro, the 20 year old from Argentina, playing in his first Grand Slam final, beat the 5 time champion Roger Federer.  After quickly falling down 1 set, Del Potro rallied back to take the next 3 out of 4 against the greatest ever.  Delpo found faith in his powerful forehand and put Federer on the ropes for much of the match. After winning 2 of the sets in a tiebreak, Del Potro went on to crush Federer in the final set 6-2.

Federer went downhill after the first set. He had difficulty with his serve, only hitting 50% first serves and double-faulting 11 times.  He even argued with the umpire, though not near the tirade Serena Williams let loose.  Federer had not lost at the US Open since 2003. He had never lost a Grand Slam final to someone not named Nadal.

The 6 foot 6 Del Potro went toe to toe with Federer and won. No excuses, no injuries, just great tennis.  This was an Open to remember…unless you were the defending champion.
