Driver Simonsen Dies At Le Mans

Driver Allan Simonsen died in an accident during the third lap of the 90th running of the 24 hours of Le Mans race Saturday. He was 34.

Simonsen, the polesitter, lost control of his GTE-Am No. 95 Aston Martin Racing Vantage V8 before making heavy contact with barriers at Tetre Rouge.

Doctors from the Automobile Club de l’Ouest medical service quickly attended to Simonsen on the scene. He was transported to the circuit medical center where he died from serious injuries.

A safety car period of more than an hour was taken to repair the barriers after the accident.

Simonsen, a Danish GT driver, won several championships throughout the world.

Sebastien Enjolras was the last driver to die at Le Mans in 1997.
