Dustin Johnson, DeChambeau Commit To World Golf Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm have each committed to the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play, tournament officials announced Thursday. With more than a month out from the tournament, six of the top 10 in the Official World Golf Ranking have already committed to return to Austin Country Club, with reigning PGA TOUR Player of the Year Brooks Koepka (No. 2), Johnson (No. 3), DeChambeau (No. 5), Rahm (No. 6), Xander Schauffele (No. 7) and Francesco Molinari (No. 10) all set for the unique match-play event March 27-31.

“We’re excited to welcome Dustin, Bryson and Jon to Austin in a little over a month as more of the world’s best continue to announce their commitment to return to compete in the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play,” said Executive Director Jordan Uppleger. “The drama of match play and unbelievable support we’ve received from the Austin community over the last three years have helped create one of the PGA TOUR’s most unique experiences for both the players and our fans, and we expect it be even better this year.”

DeChambeau, who lives in nearby Dallas and went to Southern Methodist University, will be making his first career start at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. The 25-year-old already has five PGA TOUR victories to his credit, with four coming in the last year.

Entering the 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, DeChambeau was outside of the top 64 in the world rankings when the qualification deadline was set but jumped inside the top 64 a week too late after finishing runner-up at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the week before the Dell Technologies Match Play but after the qualification deadline. In the year since, he has won the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide, THE NORTHERN TRUST, the Dell Technologies Championship, and the Shriners Hospital for Children Open and has moved inside the top five in the world rankings.

“Well, I missed out on [Dell Technologies Match Play] last year and I was really looking forward to playing. My game was good enough, but I just barely missed it. Living out of Texas now, it is truly an honor to be able to be in that event. It’s match play, and I’ve done pretty well except in the Ryder Cup,” DeChambeau said with a laugh. “I love the one-on-one competitive nature of match play, and I’m truly looking forward to a great test of golf out there in Austin.”

Johnson, the 2017 champion, will be making his 11th career appearance at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play after failing to advance to the weekend a year ago. The 19-time PGA TOUR winner has five career World Golf Championships victories to his credit, second only behind Tiger Woods’ 18. He remains the only player in history with victories at all four WGC events after previously winning the 2014 WGC-HSBC Champions, 2015 and 2017 WGC-Mexico Championship, 2017 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and 2018 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play.

His win in Austin in 2017, which was his third consecutive victory on the PGA TOUR, was one of the most dominant marches to the winner’s circle in tournament history. In total, he led 94 percent of the holes he played and never trailed in a single match over 112 holes on his way to a 1-up victory over Rahm in the championship match.

After finishing as the runner-up in his first appearance at the Dell Match Play in 2017, Rahm will be heading back to Austin hoping to avenge 2018, where he failed to advance out of the group stage after going 0-2-1 through three matches in his pod. The fiery Spaniard has been remarkably consistent on the PGA TOUR this season with five consecutive top-10s.

In addition to six of the top 10 in the world rankings, the WGC-Dell Match Play has already received commitments from past champions Bubba Watson (2018), Matt Kuchar (2013), and Ian Poulter (2010).

With total on-site attendance once again limited to 10,000 per day, tickets are expected to sell out for a fourth consecutive year and a limited amount of daily and weekly grounds tickets remain on sale at dellmatchplay.com.

With a rare, match-play format consisting of the top 64 players in the Official World Golf Rankings, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play field annually consists of the very best players from around the world from all Tours. Fans attending the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play have the opportunity to see players like Johnson, DeChambeau, Rahm, Koepka, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, Justin Rose, Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy.

As one in a series of four World Golf Championships events sanctioned and organized by the operational committee of the International Federation of PGA Tours, which includes the Asian Tour, European Tour, Japan Golf Tour, PGA TOUR, PGA Tour of Australasia and Sunshine Tour, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play is one of the most exciting and biggest events on golf’s calendar.
