IZOD IndyCar Series driver Dan Wheldon was killed during the season finale race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon was involved in a 15-car accident on lap 13 of the IZOD IndyCar Series World Championship race.
Drivers and officials decided to not continue the race following the accident. The remaining 19 cars conducted a 5-lap tribute parade.
Wheldon was a 2-time Indianapolis 500 champion who was not a regular driver in the 2011 circuit. Wheldon was racing for a special $5 million prize to be awarded if a non-regular driver would win the race from starting at the back of the field.
Wheldon had 16 IndyCar victories, most recently at the Indy 500 on May 29.
