FC Dallas Lose At KC

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – FC Dallas 8-5-4, (28 points) lost a 2-0 decision to Sporting Kansas City (6-8-3, 21 points) this evening at Children’s Mercy Park.

FC Dallas pressed Sporting high, early on in the match and the tactics nearly paid off in the 16th minute, when an errant pass from Kansas City defender Lawrence Olum trickled past goalkeeper Tim Melia and over the goal line. Unfortunately for Dallas, referee Jorge Gonzalez judged that the ball did not cross the line before Melia made a sliding clearance.

Dallas continued to pepper the Sporting goal with scoring chances through the 30th minute of the match.

Still in the 16th minute, Fabian Castillo was judged to be in an offside position by Gonzalez and a second would-be goal was overturned.

In the 24th minute, Maxi Urruti put Tesho Akindele in on goal, but a tackle from a Sporting Kansas City defender in the box knocked the forward out of the play. Gonzalez judged that there was no foul on the play.

In the 29th minute Kellyn Acosta bent a free kick to the back post, where Atiba Harris centered a header to Matt Hedges. The UNC product did well to win the second ball, but pushed his shot high, off the crossbar and out for a goal kick.

One minute later, Castillo beat Melia but had his breakaway shot smack off the

post and back into the hands of the goalkeeper to keep the score, 0-0.

FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz made his first save of the match in the 41st minute when Jacob Peterson broke in on goal alone. Seitz stood tall and made a kick save with his right foot.

Three minutes later, Sporting took a 1-0 lead when Gonzalez awarded Kansas City a free kick at the top corner of the area. Feilhaber curled a cross into the area and Olum got just enough on the pass to deflect it past Seitz and into the back corner of the net.

Just before the halftime whistle, Gonzalez awarded a penalty kick to Sporting Kansas City when he judged Walker Zimmerman to have committed a foul on Feilhaber in the area. Feilhaber opted to take the spot kick, sending Seitz to his right side before knocking a sharp pass into the opposite corner of the net.

FC Dallas head coach Oscar Pareja brought on Carlos Gruezo and Mauro Diaz in an attempt to spark his side in the 63rd minute. The move produced instant results as the duo combined, along with Castillo, to produce a cross from a dangerous area in the 64th minute. The pass was cut out by a Sporting defender but Dallas continued to press the pace of the match.

Following a clearance from Melia in the 66th minute, Acosta whistled a first-time laser just a few inches over the crossbar.

Diaz played a long driven pass to Zimmerman in the 88th minute. The 60-yard pass was on the mark and the FC Dallas defender timed his run well only to have his diving header skip past the far post.
