After playing closer for the Texas Rangers in 154 games, Neftali Feliz took the mound as a starting pitcher and earned a 1-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners Tuesday night at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington.
Feliz held the Mariners to just 4 hits over 7 innings, striking out 4. Feliz becomes just the 3rd player in Rangers history to throw at least 7 scoreless innings in his first MLB start. “There is a big difference between being a closer and being a starter,” said Feliz. “As a starter you have to think and be calm and execute. The first inning I had to make a little adjustment. I had a little pressure on me and I had to work out of it and make my pitches.”
Mike Adams and Joe Nathan closed out the game for Texas, each with a no-hit inning.
Michael Young scored the only run of the game on a single by David Murphy.
The Rangers improved to 4-1 and continue their homestand tonight against Seattle at the Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm.
