PROVIDENCE, R.I. (THE AMERICAN/SMU) – Alicia Froling was named to the American Athletic Conference All-Freshmen Team by the conference’s coaches, league officials announced Thursday. The Queensland, Australia, native averaged 11.6 during the regular season, becoming the first freshman to lead SMU in scoring since Janielle Dodds averaged 14.1 points during the 2004-05 season.

Froling scored at least 10 points 19 times this season, including a stretch of seven consecutive games in double figures, and posted five double-doubles. The 6-3 post player finished the regular season 16th in the conference overall in scoring, and ranked fourth among the league’s freshmen. She eclipsed 20 points three times, including a season-high 27 points in a win at UCF.

She also finished in the top 10 among rebounders in the conference, averaging 7.2 per game, which is first among freshmen and 10th overall. Froling set an SMU freshmen record with 54 blocks, second all-time overall in a season at SMU. She needs just four blocks to break Sarah Davis’ single-season record of 57 set in 2005-06.

In all, six players were named to the All-Freshmen team, including Conference Freshman of the Year Kia Nurse. Froling is one of six freshmen on the roster at SMU this season, which saw SMU rank in the top five nationally in percentage of minutes played by freshmen.

Froling leads the Mustangs into the American Athletic Conference Championship against Memphis Friday night at 6 p.m. ET/5 p.m. CT. The game will be broadcast live on the internet on ESPN3. SMU won 60-53 at Memphis Monday night in the regular-season finale.
