Horned Frog Tennis Takes Down Texas State, 6-1

FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s tennis team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 6-1 triumph Saturday over Texas State at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

In a match moved indoors due to lower temperatures and high winds, the Horned Frogs stumbled out of the gate to fall behind 1-0 after doubles play.

Simona Parajova and Stefanie Tan were 8-2 winners over Mariana Perez and Gabriele Rojas at No. 2 doubles, but the Bobcats were victorious at Nos. 1 and 3 to clinch the point. TCU’s No. 31-ranked duo of Millie Nichols and Olivia Smith had the day off.

The Frogs came out firing on all cylinders in singles play and quickly turned a 1-0 deficit into a rout. Federica Denti struck first for TCU with her 6-1, 6-2 disposal of Francesca Bernes at No. 4 singles. The Bellano, Italy, native squared the match at 1 and improved to 2-0 on the season.

Gaby Mastromarino, TCU’s lone senior, put the Frogs ahead for the first time when she was able to take care of Rojas, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Parajova followed suit with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Melissa Hadad at No. 2 singles to make it 3-1 in favor of the Frogs.

Nichols scored the fourth point to clinch the match for TCU when she rolled through the second set en route to a 6-4, 6-2 downing of Rachel Baldree at No. 3 singles. TCU improved to 7-0 all-time against Texas State and starts the season 2-0 for the first time since 2006.

No. 114-ranked Smith, playing at the No. 1 spot, knocked off Jessica Kahts, 6-3, 6-3 to grab her second singles win of the young season. Kelsey Sundaram provided TCU’s sixth point with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Perez at No. 6 singles.

TCU returns to action Sunday with a visit from in-state foe Lamar. First serve is set for 12 p.m., at the Friedman Tennis Center.
