On another day of blistering heat at Flushing Meadows, the top women's players began to struggle.
Venus Williams (3) needed a tiebreak to win the first set against Rebecca Marino. No. 13 Marion Bartoli lost her 2nd Round match against Virginie Razzano.
Unseeded Ana Ivanovic got through the 2nd round with a win over Jie Zheng (21). Sara Errani defeated Alisa Kleybanova (28), and Mandy Minella beat Tsvetana Pironkova (32).
The most shocking development of the day was when No. 10 Victoria Azarenka collapse to the court and was taken to a hospital while losing to Gisela Dulko 5-1 in the first set. Azarenka later released a statement via the USTA, "I was warming up in the gym prior to my match against Gisela Dulko, when I fell while running a sprint. I fell forward and hit my arm and head. I was checked by the medical team before I went on court, and they were courtside for monitoring. I felt worse as the match went on, having a headache and feeling dizzy. I also started having trouble seeing and felt weak before I fell. I was taken to the hospital for some medical tests and have been diagnosed with a mild concussion."

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitors pursuing a Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup berth only have two events remaining in the “Race to the Chase” – the 10-race stretch that precedes the Chase. That means dwindling opportunity and mounting pressure. Sunday night’s Emory HealthCare 500 at Atlanta Motor Speedway is the first of those two opportunities, a stage where several top-12-ranked drivers – and perhaps a few below that 12th-place cutoff – hope to clinch Chase spots, or claw their way to eligibility. What we know: Standings leader Kevin Harvick (No. 29 Shell/Pennzoil Chevrolet) and second-place Jeff Gordon (No. 24 DuPont/Jeff Gordon Foundation Chevrolet) have clinched their berths. Who’s next: Three drivers – third-place Kyle Busch (No. 18Pedigree Toyota), fourth-place Carl Edwards (No. 99 Aflac Ford) and fifth-place Denny Hamlin (No. 11 Sport Clips Toyota) – have very good shots at clinching at Atlanta.

JOLIET, Ill. - (Saturday, Aug. 28, 2010) - Dario Franchitti used a clever bit of strategy to win the PEAK Antifreeze & Motor Oil Indy 300 at Chicagoland Speedway and close the gap on IZOD IndyCar Series championship points leader Will Power.
Franchitti picked up the lead out of the final pit stop on Lap 173 -- relying on a double stint of the Firestone Firehawks (62 laps) - and held off Dan Wheldon by 0.0423 of a second for his third win of the season.
Power's No. 12 Verizon Team Penske crew had a fueling equipment issue on the same pit stop and he had to duck onto pit lane with five laps left for a splash. He was running fourth at the time but finished a season-low 16th.
Franchitti closed to 23 points of Power with three oval races left.
Marco Andretti led an Andretti Autosport trio in the top five with a season-best-tying third place. Ryan Hunter-Reay and Tony Kanaan followed. Helio Castroneves finished sixth and Justin Wilson advanced 16 positions to finish seventh.
Franchitti posted his 26th Indy car racing victory, tying Rodger Ward for 11th on the all-time list (USAC, CART, Indy Racing league sanction). Johnny Rutherford (27) is next. |

The 2010 US Open began with no major upsets or drama. No. 2 seed and 5-time champion Roger Federer wasted little time winning his headlining match against Brian Dabul. Along the way, Federer delighted the crowd with a between-the-legs winner reminiscent of last year's match against Novak Djokovic.
The top-ranked American, No. 9 Andy Roddick easily won his match over Stephane Robert in straight sets. Also winning in the men's draw was No. 5 Robin Soderling, who received a scare from Andreas Haider-Maurer. Soderling needed the full 5 sets to earn the victory.
No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko had little trouble in his straight sets win over Michael Russell.
The women's draw got underway with last year's cindarella story, American Melanie Oudin earning a victory over Olga Savchuk.
Defending champion Kim Clijsters (2) and American Venus Williams (3) each won their opening matches in straight sets.
No. 5 Samantha Stosur needed a third set to overcome Elena Vesnina. French Open champion Francesca Schiavone (6) easily over Ayumi Morita.
No. 10 Victoria Azarenka had a 2nd set letdown in her 3 set victory over Monica Niculescu.
Fan favorite Ana Ivanovic opened with a win over Ekaterina Makarova.

The Dallas Cowboys were humiliated again by the Houston Texans 23-7 in the preseason dress rehearsal. The starters played into the 3rd quarter and were dominated on both sides of the ball. Tony Romo and the offense looked concerned that they still haven't been able to score. John Kitna led Dallas to it's only touchdown early in the 4th quarter.
The Good
The only good thing in this game is that it is one game closer to the end of a dismal preseason. Even in their victories, the team has not looked good.
The Bad
The physical effort by the Cowboys. Dallas is getting beat on the line of scrimmage. Tony Romo has been hit on almost every drive, something that should not be happening in meaningless games. The triple-threat running game has been no threat at all, with Dallas only gaining 13 yards rushing against Houston.
The Ugly
The Dallas starting offense has not scored a touchdown in the preseason. The few times they get into the red zone, they seem to move backwards or turn the ball over. One of the big question marks going into the season, David Buehler's field goal ability was not even evaluated because Dallas could not get into range. The game was so ugly, head coach Wade Phillips may choose to play his starters in the final preseason game this week at home in Cowboys Stadium.
