The Dallas Mavericks fell to the Memphis Grizzlies 90-84 on Wednesday night in a game that the Mavericks needed to win to keep their name in the playoff picture. The Mavericks have only won one game on the road against a team with a record greater than .500.

The Mavericks had a great start to the game outscoring the Grizzlies 38-19 after the first quarter. The Mavericks extended their lead up to 25 points in the second quarter but were outscored 71-46 after the first quarter as the Grizzlies had an unanswered 24 point run in the third quarter. Dallas scored only 29 points in the second half.

The Dallas Mavericks had shot 59 percent in the first half and were held to only 11.9 percent in the third quarter primarily due a hardened defensive stance. Just one more lesson that Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle and his team had to learn this season.

“They [the Grizzlies] applied pressure and we didn’t attack it well. It’s another tough lesson in a season full of tough lessons,” said Carlisle, “Our guards have to understand when they see that kind of pressure that they have to attack it right away. We’ve got to do more to help them if we can.”

Dirk Nowitzki, who had been on a scoring spree with the Mavericks, scored only 10 points and had four rebounds. He passed Larry Bird for 21st place for most field goals made in a career. Forward Shawn Marion led the Mavericks with 16 points and eight rebounds.

The Mavericks (25-32) are set to take on the Brooklyn Nets (34-24) on Friday in Brooklyn. Tip-off is at 7:00 p.m.
