Nadal wins 5th French Open

Rafael Nadal completed his triumphant return to the top of the tennis world with a victory over Robin Soderling in the French Open final.  It is Nadal’s 5th title at Roland Garros, only one fewer than Bjorn Borg for most all-time.  In six years, Nadal has lost only once on the red clay of the French Open, ironically, against the same opponent he vanqueshed today.  In addition to reclaiming the Roland Garros title, Nadal will also overtake Roger Federer for the world No. 1 ranking.

Soderling was outmatched from the beginning of the match, his second consecutive French Open final loss.  Soderling’s serve, which had been his most potent weapon in this event, was not consistent.   He only landed 56% 1st serve attempts while making 45 unforced errors.

Nadal, on the other hand, was nearly perfect, with only 16 unforced errors and a 1st serve percentage of 77%.
