No. 28 Texas A&M Too Much For TCU on Monday

FORT WORTH – TCU’s women’s tennis team was unable to find momentum in singles play Monday night and fell to No. 28 Texas A&M, 6-1, under the lights of the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.

The Aggies improved to 6-1 with the win, while the 32nd-ranked Horned Frogs dropped to 4-3 on the year. It was the third-straight win for A&M in the series between the in-state rivals.

“To lose the doubles the way we did was tough,” TCU coach Dave Borelli said. “We had match points and played a ball that was going out at match point. That’s just how the doubles went. I think we kind of checked out in singles after that. A&M is good and we just couldn’t come back after the doubles, which was kind of disappointing. It’s a long year, but if we can get healthy we’ll be fine. It’s a long process and our goal is still to win the conference and make the NCAAs.”

TCU dropped the doubles point to open the match in deflating fashion, as the Aggies won tiebreakers at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles. The Frogs got their lone win in doubles at No. 3, when Gaby Mastromarino and Simona Parajova picked up an 8-5 decision to improve to 3-0 on the year.

A&M won the next two matches to clinch the doubles point by fighting off match points for 9-8 (5) wins on the top two courts. Janelle Cuthbertson and Nazari Urbina’s win over Federica Denti and Kelsey Sundaram put the Aggies ahead 1-0.

From there, TCU was unable to get anything going in singles as A&M’s Cristina Sanchez-Quintanar and Sun Wen proved worthy of their rankings. The No. 14-ranked Sanchez-Quintanar and No. 86-ranked Wen both won in straight sets.

The Frogs got on the board late in the match with Denti’s 7-6 (1), 3-6, 1-0 (3) win over Cuthbertson at No. 5 singles. It was the Bellano, Italy, native’s return to the lineup after missing two matches due to injury.

TCU gets right back to action Wednesday with a visit from UT-Arlington. First serve at the Friedman Tennis Center is set for 5:30 p.m.
