No Sugar For Sharapova

Maria Sharapova has decided not to change her last name to Sugarpova for the two-week run of the U.S. Open beginning next week.

The Times of London reported that Sharapova had considered changing her name to the name of her candy company launched last year, but ultimately decided against it.

“Maria has pushed her team to do fun, out-of-the-box-type things to get the word out about Sugarpova,” her agent, Max Eisenbud, told ESPN.com. “In Miami, we’re going to fill a glass truck full of candy and drive it around town. This was an idea that fell along those lines. But, at the end of the day, we would have to change all her identification, she has to travel to Japan and China right after the tournament and it was going to be very difficult.”

Sharapova introduced the Sugarpova line in 2012, and the company sold 1.8 million bags of candy worldwide in its first fiscal year, according to the website. She intends to expand the brand this fall by adding pendants, purses and other accessories.

Sharapova is a Russian citizen who resides in Florida on a green card, and she would have to go through numerous steps in order to have her name changed, including filing a name change petition in the state, fingerprints, a background check and a hearing before a judge.
