MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The North Texas Mean Green (2-9, 1-1) came up short in the final seconds against conference rival Middle Tennessee (7-5, 2-1) by a final score of 66-64.

“Every game has been like this, I have seen nine games identical to this one,” head coach Mike Petersen said. “We just need to find that one extra basket or that one less defensive mistake, and I think we will be okay.”

Following a physical first half that included a fierce battle along the boards, North Texas entered the second half leading by two,30-28 but the half would not be much different from the first. The game remained a back and forth contest throughout the remainder of the game and included 20 lead changes.

In the final 15 seconds with the Mean Green up 64-63, Middle Tennessee’s Icelyn Elie knocked down a corner three ball to put the Blue Raiders up one. After one final timeout, North Texas was unable to answer and dropped another heartbreaker.

Despite the loss, NT spread the wealth as freshmen Loryn Goodwin (12) and Alexis Hyder (13) both put up double figures. Junior guard and floor general Laura McCoy also put up 12 in a bounce back effort for her following two straight zero-point efforts.

North Texas takes the court again in two days in Bowling Green, Ky. against the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers to lead off a doubleheader that features the North Texas men’s hoops crew following the women’s game. Tipoff will be at 4 p.m.
