North Texas Women Lose To Tulsa

DENTON, TX – A 13-4 run – ignited by North Texas turnovers and fueled by Mean Green fouls – turned a one-point game into a double-digit deficit and sent the North Texas women’s basketball team to a 79-63 loss Wednesday night at the Super Pit.
The Mean Green had pulled within one of Tulsa at 51-50 when turnovers on three-straight possessions sapped the North Texas momentum, a shift that saw the Golden Hurricanes roll to a 17-point lead.
“They went to the line 39 times, and made 17 more free throws than we did,” said North Texas coach Mike Petersen, whose team slipped to 8-12 on the season and 2-5 in Conference USA games. “It’s a 16-point game. Not that hard to do the math. We didn’t do a good enough job moving our feet, and we weren’t ready to defend, so they went to the free-throw line.”
North Texas got double-figure scoring from three players, but all three were hobbled by foul trouble that limited their minutes. Alexis Hyder led the Mean Green with 14 points and played a key role in
getting North Texas within one point of the lead with 12:42 to play. Briesha Wynn had 13 and Acheil Tac scored 12 points.
“Problem was we only got 21, 27 and 26 (minutes from Wynn, Hyder and Tac, respectively),” Petersen said. “We’ve got to get more from those three.”
Tulsa (10-7, 4-2 in Conference USA) started fast, scoring in the paint – a problem that would dog the Mean Green much of the game – to open an 11-6 lead. But North Texas gradually tightened its defense, slowing the Golden Hurricanes while getting its own offense untracked, and Breisha Wynn’s eight points in the first 10 minutes gave the Mean Green its first lead at 15-14. The lead changed hands 10 times until the final two minutes, when Tulsa rode a 7-0 run to a 36-32 halftime advantage.
But North Texas began to inside as well, getting scoring from Hyder and Tac to draw within one midway through the second half before Tulsa took control.
