Rangers Bats Bail Out Yu’s Debut

The much anticipated beginning of Yu Darvish’s MLB career got off to a shaky start Monday night at the Ballpark in Arlington.  The 42,000 fans in attendance saw the Rangers pitcher gave up 4 runs in the first inning on 4 hits, 3 walks, and a wild pitch.  Darvish struggled in the 2nd inning as well, giving up 2 doubles and allowing a run.

By the 3rd inning, the rookie settled into the game and ended with 5 2/3 innings pitched, allowing 8 hits and striking out 5.  “I felt very calm mentally, but my body felt like it wanted to go and go and go. My mind and my body were not on the same page. All my pitches I had a hard time commanding. It was more of a mental battle. I just tried to stay in there and battle,” said Darvish.

Fortunately for Darvish, his teammates found their stride offensively and the Rangers came away with an 11-5 victory.

Nelson Cruz, Mitch Moreland, Josh Hamilton, and Ian Kinsler all hit home runs for Texas.  The Rangers’ 11 runs came on 12 hits.  Hamilton and Cruz led the way with 3 hits each.

The Texas bullpen did not give up a run as Alexi Ogando, Mike Adams, and Scott Feldman combined for 3 1/3 innings.  Each reliever gave up just one hit.

The Rangers and Mariners play tonight at the Ballpark at 7:05pm.
