The Texas Rangers fought off the Mariners on Thursday night to earn a 4-3 victory in Seattle. Texas used 5 pitchers in the game to deny Seattle ace Felix Hernandez his 100th victory.
Rangers starter Justin Grimm lasted just 4 innings, but held the Mariners to just 2 runs on 5 hits. Joe Ortiz took over in the 5th inning and is credited with the win after allowing no runs and no hits. Joe Nathan earned the save with a scoreless inning in the 9th. Catcher A.J. Pierzynski credited the pitchers with the win, “Joe Ortiz did a great job and so did the rest of the bullpen. To get out of all the messes and jams we did tonight was a testament to those guys as competitors.”
Eight of nine Rangers starters got a base hit in the game, led by catcher Pierzynski, who had a home run as one of his two hits.
“It’s all about execution,” manager Ron Washington said. “It came down to execution to win a ballgame and we did just that.”
Yu Darvish will be back on the mound for the Rangers tonight in Seattle.
