Rangers Reinstate Tommy Hunter From DL

The Texas Rangers announced that the club has reinstated right-handed pitcher Tommy Hunter from the 15-day disabled list.  To make room on the 25-man roster for Hunter, the club has designated right-handed pitcher Dave Bush for assignment.

Hunter, who turns 25 on Sunday, will be looking to make his first major league appearance in 2011. He opened the season on the 15-day disabled list with a right groin strain suffered in a spring training outing on March 24. Hunter began a rehabilitation assignment in early May, but aggravated the groin injury on the final pitch of an outing with Round Rock on May 9 vs. Nashville. After returning to full strength, Hunter made 7 appearances for Round Rock on his recent rehabilitation assignment from June 4-30, going 1-2 with a 6.53 ERA (15 ER/20.2 IP) in 7 games/4 starts. One of those outings involved a suspended game that was finished two days later. Each of his final 3 outings came in relief, including a save (1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 SO, 15 pitches/9 strikes) in his last outing last night vs. Nashville.

Hunter has pitched for Texas in each of the last three seasons, going 22-12 with a 4.45 ERA (124 ER/251.0 IP) in 45 games/44 starts in his big league career. His lone career relief outing was on Sept. 28, 2010 vs. Seattle, recording 2 outs on 9 pitches ahead of his most recent regular season game (start on Oct. 1, 2010 vs. LAA) as Texas lined up its pitching for the postseason. Hunter’s last game overall for Texas was a loss in World Series Game 4 on Oct. 31 vs. San Francisco (4.0 IP, 2 R-ER).

Bush was on the Opening Day roster and has gone 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA (24 ER/37.1 IP) in 17 games/3 starts for Texas this season. He is one of six pitchers to make a start for Texas in 2011. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Bush to the minor leagues.

With these moves, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club’s 40-man roster.
