The Texas Rangers struggled from the beginning as they were shut out 0-7 against the Seattle Mariners on Saturday. The series is tied 1-1 and it is the Rangers first loss following the All-Star break.

Despite the break due to All-Star week, starting pitcher Yu Darvish felt confident that there was no lag in his pitching and refused to use the All-Star break as an excuse for his rough start to the game.

“I still felt game-ready,” Darvish said. “I didn’t feel any effects of the 12 days of rest.”

Darvish played 6 1/3 innings and gave up seven runs and eight hits in the loss against the Mariners, a team that Darvish knows very well from his first start in the Major League. Darvish had four strikeouts for the night and gave up only one home run. He is now 10-6 for the Rangers.

Manager Ron Washington believes that Darvish’s pitching control issues are what ultimately led the rough outting.

“His command was not good. That’s what hurt him in the first inning,” Washington said. “That’s one of the things that he’s going to have to work on.”

The Rangers offense was held scoreless by pitcher Felix Hernandez. Elvis Andrus, Michael Young and Yorvit Torrealba, who is replacing Mike Napoli due to injury, were the contributors to the Rangers three hits in the game. David Murphy, who finished the night without a hit, attributes Hernandez’s success to the early lead that the Mariners received after the first inning.

“He’s always had great stuff and tonight was even better than usual,” outfielder David Murphy said. “He got a four-run lead and definitely used it to his advantage by pounding the strike zone. Tonight was his night.”

Hernandez had a great performance against the Rangers striking out 12 of the Rangers hitters and only giving up three hits in 9 innings of play. He improved his record to 7-5 in the shut out win. Catcher John Jaso recorded his fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the fifth inning to help the Mariners take a commanding lead in the game.

The Rangers hope to win the series when they take on the Mariners on Sunday. First pitch is in Seattle at 3:10 p.m.
