Rangers Win Home Opener

The Texas Rangers won the long-anticipated home opener today against the Los Angeles Angels 3-2.  It is the 5th straight win in the home opening game of the season.  The sellout crowd of 48,845, including former President George W. Bush, got their money’s worth as the Rangers needed an 8th inning run to break a 2-2 tie.

Texas second baseman Ian Kinsler hit a line drive to right field which brought on a race between Craig Gentry running from second base against Josh Hamilton’s throw from the outfield.  As Hamilton’s throw short-hopped wide, Gentry crossed the plate to give the Rangers the lead.

Hamilton, who left the Rangers during the off-season, was soundly booed by the Texas crowd each time he came to the plate or fielded a ball.  Hamilton was ineffective in the game, striking out twice while going 0-4 at the plate.

The Rangers pounded out 12 hits in the game, with Nelson Cruz and A.J. Pierzynski each going 3-4.  Lance Berkman went 1-4 as he, Cruz, and Pierzynski continue to have hits in every game this season.

Adrian Beltre hit his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the 7th inning which tied the game at 2-2.

Starting pitcher Derek Holland left the game after 7 innings with the score tied.  Holland gave up just 2 runs on 6 hits.   Tanner Scheppers pitched one shutout inning and was credited with the win.  Joe Nathan earned his first save of the year.

The Rangers and Angels face off again Saturday at 3:05pm.  Matt Harrison will take the mound for Texas against Tommy Hanson.
