Roddick Advances In Australia

Texan Andy Roddick advances to the 2nd round of the 2012 Auatralian Open after defeating Robin Haase of the Netherlands in straight sets. Roddick, seeded 15th, will face the veteran Australian Lleyton Hewitt in the 2nd round. After falling out of the top-10 ranking for the first time since 2002, Roddick is eager to go deep into the draw.

Other men’s matches in Round 1 of the Australian Open went as predicted, will all of the top-10 men winning. Top-seeded Novak Djokovic cruised to a win, giving up just 2 games to Italian Paolo Lorenzi.

American men won 6 of 11 matches, an improvement over recent slams. In addition to Roddick at 15, other seeded Americans are Mardy Fish (8) and John Isner (16).

The biggest upset of the tournament turned out to be the most recent Grand Slam winner, Samanth Stosur. After winning the US Open, Stosur (6) gave in to the pressure of her home event, and lost in straight sets to Romanian Sorana Cirstea.

The rest of the top-10 women all advanced to the 2nd round. Only Vera Zvonareva (7) and Agnieszka Radwanska (8) needed 3 sets to advance.

Serena Williams (12) put the rest of the field on notice that she is back from injury with a late-night win over Tamira Paszek. Also making it to the 2nd round are Americans Sloane Stephens, Jamie Hampton, Vania King, and Christina McHale.
