Roger Federer Stunned

Marcos Baghdatis had the night of his life Tuesday as he defeated the number 1 player in the world, Roger Federer at the BNP Paribas Open.  After saving 3 match points, Baghdatis went on to force the game into a tiebreak and take the victory.   This was the first time in 4 years that Federer lost a match where he had match points.   Federer made 46 unforced errors, handing the match to Bahgdatis, who played a consistent, conservative game.  “You cannot be aggressive the whole match,” said Bahgdatis. “You have to choose the points that you have to be aggressive. You have to be smart. You have to change the game. I think that’s what I did well today. Roger was, I can say, a bit too aggressive. He was missing a lot of balls, and I was more calm than him today.”

In other men’s action, Andy Murray (4), Robin Soderling (6), Andy Roddick (7), and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (9) all were winners.  American James Black was eliminated by Nicolas Almagro with a little help from the chair umpire who overturned 3 line calls, all going against Blake.

For the first time of the tournament, all of the top-seeded women were winners, highlighted by Caroline Wozniacki (2), Elena Dementieva (4), Agniezska Radwanska (5), Jelena Jankovic (6), and Samantha Stosur (8)
