Roger Staubach to throw 1st pitch for Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers today announced that Roger Staubach will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the team’s 2010 home opener on Monday, April 5 against the Toronto Blue Jays (1:05 p.m.).

Staubach, who had a legendary career as the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys from 1969-79, was instrumental in the selection of Arlington as the site of Super Bowl XLV in his role as Chairman of the North Texas Super Bowl XLV Host Committee. The National Football League awarded the game to Arlington in May 2007, and the first Super Bowl ever in North Texas will be played on February 6, 2011 at Cowboys Stadium. Since that time, Staubach has continued to be extensively involved in all aspects of the organization and execution of Super Bowl XLV and the surrounding events.

“We feel that Roger Staubach is a very appropriate choice for this year’s first pitch,” commented Rangers President Nolan Ryan. “This gives us the opportunity to salute his efforts in bringing Super Bowl XLV to Arlington.”

This marks the 24th consecutive year that the Rangers have honored “Texas Heroes” as part of their opening day ceremonies. Other individuals with Dallas Cowboys ties who have performed the opening day first pitch are Tom Landry, Troy Aikman, Emmitt Smith, and Michael Irvin.

Obstructed view and standing room only tickets remain for the home opener. All other reserved seats have been sold.
