Rookie Jones Injures Shoulder

Dallas Cowboys rookie first-round pick Byron Jones injured his left shoulder Sunday and is scheduled for further testing despite downplaying the injury.

Jones had shoulder surgery while at UConn. He said Sunday after colliding with teammate Morris Claiborne in seven-on-seven drills in training camp at Oxnard, Calif., that the injury didn’t seem serious.

Owner and general manager Jerry Jones said he was optimistic Byron Jones would be back on the field soon. However, he is unlikely to play this week in a preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Cowboys are battling injuries at the position with Brandon Carr (hand) and Orlando Scandrick (knee) sidelined.

Head coach Jason Garrett said Monday that Byron Jones’ MRI was precautionary.
