World No. 3 Maria Sharapova has withdrawn from the 2013 US Open due to right shoulder bursitis.

“Maria has informed us that she will be unable to compete at the US Open this year due to a right shoulder bursitis and has withdrawn from the tournament,” US Open Tournament Director David Brewer said in a statement. “We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return to New York next year.”

Sharapova, the 2006 US Open champion, had played just one match since losing in the second round at Wimbledon this summer. She reached the semifinals at the US Open a year ago and has missed only one other Open (2008) since her debut in 2003.

A four-time Grand Slam tournament champion, Sharapova has struggled with shoulder injuries in the past, undergoing right shoulder surgery in 2008 that forced her off the WTA tour for nine months. She returned in mid-2009, climbing back into the Top 20 for the season after having dropped out of the Top 100. She has not missed any significant time due to the shoulder injury since that time.

Due to Sharapova’s withdrawal, Agnieszka Radwanska becomes the No. 3 seed at the 2013 US Open, and each lower-seeded player now moves up one position. Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova now becomes the No. 32 seed.
