Singleton Scores Career High To Lead SMU To Win Over Texas Southern

DALLAS (SMU) – Mallory Singleton scored a career-high 16 points to lead SMU to a 66-50 win over Texas Southern in Moody Coliseum Monday night. Singleton was one of four Mustangs to score in double-figures, with Alisha Filmore and Korina Baker scoring 12, and Destynee Hives-McCray added 11.

The Mustangs improved to 2-0, winning their second straight home game by more than 15 points, leading by as many as 22 over the Lady Tigers (0-1). Texas Southern took an 8-3 lead just under four minutes into the game, but the Mustangs went on a 14-0 run to take a 17-8 lead with 10:34 left in the first half. SMU stretched the lead to 12 points at halftime, 37-25, and the Lady Tigers never got with 10 points the rest of the way.

SMU shot 46.2 percent from the field in the first half, connecting on 12 of 26 attempts, and went 6-of-9 from 3-point range. Hives-McCray scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and was 3-for-3 at the free throw line, hitting all eight attempts this season. Freshman Farrin Bell pulled down seven of her nine rebounds in the second half and scored seven points.

Singleton was 7-of-13 from the field, hitting two out of three 3-point attempts, and grabbed five rebounds with two blocks. Filmore was 4-of-10 from the field with two 3-pointers and had six steals and five assists. SMU forced Texas Southern into 30 turnovers, stealing the ball 19 times as a team, and converted them into 29 points. The Lady Tigers shot 33.3 percent for the game, and made just 4 of 22 attempts in the second half, 18.2 percent.

The Mustangs take on North Texas Thursday night in Moody Coliseum at 7 p.m. SMU will be playing the third game of a season-opening six-game homestand, while North Texas lost its season opener 88-83 at home against Texas State.
