SMU Cross Country Wins Ken Garland Invitational

DENTON, Texas (SMU) – The SMU women’s cross country team placed first at the Ken Garland Invitational hosted by North Texas. Freshman Tova Magnusson paced the Mustangs as she finished second (17:59.96) overall out of 53 total runners from five schools in the 5k race.

“Tova ran a smart race and did a great job,” head coach Cathy Casey said. “When she hit the two-mile mark, she really went for it and it paid off.”

In addition to Magnusson, sophomores Shanoah Souza and Holly Archer and freshman Agnes Sjöström immediately followed behind her finishing third (18:02.81), fourth (18:03.69) and fifth (18:16.61) overall, respectively.

Also finishing in the top 10 for the Mustangs was senior Caitlin Keen as she finished in seventh crossing the finish line in a time of 18:41.25.

Freshmen Julie Vanderhout (18:57.20), Margaret Brennan (19:28.03) and Lauren Zabaleta (20:04.56) all competed for the Mustangs finishing in the top 25.

“Our goal was obviously to run well as a team and we did that today,” Casey said. “We look forward to running next week at Notre Dame.”

SMU next competes at the aforementioned Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Indiana on Friday, October 4 at 4:00 pm.
