SMU Cross Country Wins Second Consecutive Meet

ARLINGTON (SMU) – The SMU cross country team finished first in its second consecutive meet at the UT-Arlington Invitational Saturday morning. The course was a 2-mile run around Vandergriff Park in Arlington.

The Mustangs scored a total of 38 points, five points in front of the runner-up, TCU (43). Baylor (52) finished in third, host UTA (76) took fourth, and Northwood (138) came in fifth.

Silje Fjortoft took the gold medal for the second time this season. She finished with a time of 10:31, one of the fastest times ever run on UTA’s course. Two other Ponies also finished in the top-ten; Kristine Eikrem-Engeset finished third (11:02) and Monika Korra placed sixth (11:14).

“I was really proud of the way all of the girls competed. We have had some tough training these past few weeks and it is starting to pay off,” said SMU cross country coach Cathy Casey.

The Mustangs hope to continue their win streak as they travel to San Antonio, Texas on Friday, Sept. 16, to compete in the UTSA Ricardo Romo/Six Flags Fiesta Texas Classic.
